The “Give’em a Hand” Dusty Richardel Memorial Award is a monetary award to be presented to various Louisiana High School Seniors after graduation to aid them in the start of a blue-collared career. The award targets non-university track students pursuing a career in one of the following areas: carpentry/woodworking, welding, electrical, diesel mechanics, nautical sciences/marine operations, machining/manufacturing, EMT, business, food industry, art or ROTC
Students who apply are expected to write a short 200 word essay about:
• Future plans for the next 5 years
• Career aspirations
• What supplies, tools, etc., they would need to begin their chosen career
• What future education/training would be needed for their chosen career
Finalists will be expected to conduct an interview with members of Dusty’s family and the Give 'Em a Hand scholarship committee, after which a recipient will be chosen.
Our committee used a very hands-on approach to the allocation of these funds. Due to the wide variety of industries and trades that the blue collar workforce encompasses, it was evident that there was no one-size-fits-all application to giving these students a hand. These awards range in purpose, from buying steel toe boots and tools, to paying for books and tuition at their chosen trade or vocational schools.
The past two years we have awarded 27 scholarships ranging in value from $500 to $2,500, for a total of $35,000. Fish the Bayou awarded 12 scholarships for a total of $20,000 to 2013-2014 Louisiana high school students, funded by its fishing tournament, "Fish the Bayou," and its many local sponsors.
